Charlie Myatt prosecutes and defends in all areas of criminal law at a senior level.  His principal area of expertise is in prosecuting and defending in the full range of sexual offences both as leading Counsel and junior Counsel to Silk with a particular focus on historic child sexual abuse cases.

Charlie is regularly instructed in murder cases both prosecuting and defending in his own right and as junior Counsel to Silk.

In addition, Charlie has a wide experience of prosecuting and defending in high value drugs conspiracy cases and is also instructed to prosecute complex frauds for the CPS.

In 2018 Charlie took an extended sabbatical from Drystone and the Bar to spend more time with his elderly parents and join their family ice cream business as Sales & Marketing Director alongside his two brothers. He returned to Drystone in April 2022 suitably refreshed and reinvigorated after his four years away.

Notable Murder & Manslaughter cases


R v Bell & Others (2023)

Being led by Karim Khalil KC in a 6-handed conspiracy to murder trial listed for two months at the Central Criminal Court at the end of this year. Case involves sensitive issues with alleged links to South London gangs.


R v Kelly-Bridle (2022)

Led by Karim Khalil KC in successful prosecution of defendant for murder and arson in which the defendant strangled his sister-in-law in her home and set fire to the house in an attempt to cover his tracks.


R v. Dennehy & Stretch (2014)

Defending Gary Stretch as junior to Silk, accomplice to Joanna Dennehy, at trial for two attempted murders; Dennehy having previously pleaded guilty to three murders.


R v. Mosley (2015) Prosecuting as junior to Silk

D convicted of murder and attempted murder. Incident at a travellers’ site between two families after a ‘fair fight’ dramatically escalated when D introduced a sawn-off shotgun.

Majority of practice involves prosecuting and defending in all levels of seriousness of sexual offences involving both adults and children. RASSO panel member. Regularly complimented on ability to engage with young or reluctant witnesses and gain their trust in achieving their best evidence.

Notable Sexual Offences cases


R v Tariq (2023)

Successful prosecution of defendant accused of kidnapping a 13 year-old girl off the streets of Peterborough and sexually assaulting her in the back of his car. Sentenced to 11 years 9 months’ imprisonment.


R v Wakefield (2023)

Prosecuting defendant convicted of serious sexual offences against two young girls, one being autistic, whom he had separately groomed through family connections. An initial total sentence of 13 years’ custody was successfully referred to the Court of Appeal and 18.5 years’ substituted.


R v Hockley (2023)

Prosecuted defendant at trial who was convicted of arranging child prostitution in the Philippines and distributing the images thus procured. Sentenced to 12 years’ 3 months’ imprisonment.


R v. M (2017)

Prosecuted D on 6 count multiple incident indictment alleging repeated rapes and sexual assaults of a severely disabled adult whilst employed within her Residential Care Home. After early guilty pleas, sentenced to an extended sentence of 26 years’ imprisonment (18 + 8).

R v Jay (2022)

Prosecution of male defendant at trial for befriending and repeatedly sexually abusing his landlady’s young teenage son. Total sentence of 16 years’ custody imposed


R v. SM (2018)

Prosecuted D (aged 83) on 18 count indictment alleging multiple rapes against his daughter and granddaughters. Convicted on all counts. Sentenced to 19 years’ special custodial sentence.

Prosecuted and defended in a number of Class A drug conspiracies involving organised crime groups across the country.

Prosecuted in multi-handed conspiracy to run brothels as leading Junior.

R v Hasani & Others (2023)

Led Giles Fleming in a successful prosecution of 6 defendants accused of conspiracy to launder drugs money in a 5-week trial at Cambridge Crown Court.


Operation Keep (2018)

Prosecuting 9 defendants in conspiracy to supply Class A drugs (cocaine) trial which ultimately led to guilty pleas.


Operation Oakland (2011)

Leading Junior prosecuting 6 defendants in Eastern European prostitution ring in Suffolk, Norfolk, Essex, Wiltshire and Devon involving input from the UK Border Agency and UK Human Trafficking Centre working with the Suffolk Serious and Organised Crime Unit. Instructed by Complex Casework Unit.

Notable Driving Fatalities/Causing Serious Injury cases


R v Nowak (2022)

Successful prosecution of defendant for causing death by dangerous driving. The defendant drove at excessive speeds whilst filming himself on his mobile phone.
