Drystone Chambers provides CPS pupil with month-long secondment

6 March 2023

Drystone Chambers offered a CPS Wessex pupil a Secondment to experience the life of a barrister from another perspective. During their month long time on the Western Circuit, which opened with a trip to a Court Martial, they were fully immersed and involved in seeing a wide-ranging type of work including two defence Crown Court trials in sexual assault matters, conferences, PTPHs and pleas in cases of attempted murder, death by dangerous driving and multiple count multi complainant rape from Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset to Reading and Norwich as well as the first week of a 4-week drugs conspiracy trial.

Along the way while most of the pupil’s time was spent under the guidance of Robert Bryan, there was also opportunity to go to Court with other Members of Drystone Chambers including our most junior practitioner.

We were delighted to be able to offer the chance to see life from another angle: meeting solicitors and the accused, those just arrested on warrants and those facing trial, seeing advice being given to those facing extremely lengthy sentences and having the opportunity to draft documents that would be outside the usual CPS sphere.
