Drystone Chambers’ Richard Davies secures not guilty verdict by reason of insanity for client charged with mother’s murder

15 December 2021

Richard Davies, Led by Mark Graffius QC, secured a not guilty verdict by reason of insanity for his client who was charged with the murder of his mother.

The defendant and his mother went for a walk together in the countryside. It was suggested that, due to his underlying paranoid schizophrenia, the defendant suffered a psychotic episode and believed that his mother had become a demon who was trying to lure him to his death.

After the frenzied attack, which included stamping repeatedly on his mother and removing her eyeballs, it is reported that he bit the head off a chicken and threw himself in front of a moving vehicle.

The case involved an in-depth analysis of extensive psychiatric evidence.

Richard was instructed by SMQ Legal.
