Prior to commencing pupillage, Gillian regularly worked as a research assistant at different universities. She most frequently assisted with the research of child sexual abuse in legal proceedings but has also been involved in the research of mental capacity law and the topic of mediation in medical treatment disputes. In these roles, she has co-authored articles and reports, including those for the Medical Law Review and the International Academy of Comparative Law, and delivered presentations at academic conferences. She also spent two years as a legal assistant to a barrister with a diverse civil practice during which she assisted with the preparation of a variety of cases ranging from tort and property disputes to chancery and commercial matters.

During her LLB, she was an active member of the Essex Law Clinic and was involved in numerous pro bono projects, most notably leading a Women’s Legal Advice Group in their work with the Centre for Action on Rape and Abuse in Colchester and acting as a student legal advisor. She has also previously worked on pro bono projects in collaboration with the Freedom Law Clinic and JENGbA.
