Gemma Gillet is an experienced barrister, acting and advising parties in relation to financial litigation and professional regulatory matters.
Gemma regularly represents banks and finance institutions in the County Court.
She has acted as Senior Counsel/Independent Consultant at an international law firm within the Litigation & Dispute Management team acting for one the UK’s leading banks on a large portfolio of litigation. She provided strategic advice to the client and team, managing risk and ensured compliance with the litigation process.
She has been seconded into major financial institutions to assist with FCA lead reviews into complicated financial products and subsequent consequential losses. She has also assisted in the conduct in civil litigation in response to such reviews.
Gemma has been appointed as a Legal Advisor for a Professional Regulatory Body. She provides accurate and timely legal advice to assist the lay panel during regulatory proceedings. She prepares written outcomes, ensuring reasoning and clear justification of decisions are made in an accurate, concise manner.
Gemma has represented many professional regulatory bodies and registrants at tribunal hearings and the High Court.
For several years prior to this Gemma was instructed across the full range of criminal cases including dishonesty, violence, sexual offences and trading standards matters.
She has acted and advised local authorities on criminal prosecutions and represented local authorities at Coroner’s Inquests, where she has been commended for her delicate handling of tragic events.
Gemma is a forthright advocate with strong witness handling skills and the ability to understand complex professional issues and terminology. She has advised regulatory bodies on matters of procedure and evidence in order to guide policy decisions and has also appeared on behalf of these clients at the High Court
Gemma has lectured in Tort and Land Law at BPP on a freelance basis. She has also taught Criminal litigation on the BPC at the College of Law.
Gemma has extensive experience in advising and representing parties at all stages of regulatory proceedings. She is regularly instructed in lengthy and complex hearings including issues of lack of competence in highly specialised and technical areas. For example, errors and disputes in relation to patient diagnosis, scientific research, record keeping and others, and serious allegations of misconduct, including issues of dishonesty, sexual assaults, improper relationships and others.
Gemma is a forthright advocate with strong witness handling skills and the ability to understand complex professional issues and terminology (both healthcare and financial). Gemma has advised regulatory bodies on matters of procedure and evidence in order to guide policy decisions and has also appeared on behalf of these clients at the High Court.
Assists Professional Regulatory Panels as a legal adviser, performing a vital role in ensuring hearings are conducted within the law and that a panel’s reasoning is clear within a written determination.

Gemma is an experienced Barrister, who has seconded as Senior Legal Counsel to a major international bank to advise on a large-scale, high profile Financial Conduct Authority review into the mis-selling of derivate trades.
She worked as part of multidisciplinary teams of in-house lawyers, external counsel, financial advisors, bankers and forensic accountants, to analyse and assess huge volumes of sensitive banking and financial material in response to individual complaints.
She drafted FCA reports and detailed letters to the Bank’s customers accurately explaining the outcome of each investigation in a manner which was sensitive to corporate reputation. Gemma also has experience acting for financial institutions in civil proceedings.
