Successful Conclusion of Prosecution

Ryan Thompson leading Lidia Iancu conclude an 11-week trial at Inner London Crown Court prosecuting on behalf of Southwark Council.

Unlawful Diversion of Animal By-Products

Four individuals and a company were accused of conspiracy to defraud by diverting animal-by-product (meat destined for pet food) back into the human food chain.

The court heard evidence of a complex investigation that started with 1.9 tonnes of Category 3 animal by products found by investigators at an illegal meat cutting plant in London and being processed for sale into the human food chain.

Guilty Pleas and Convictions Secured

Three defendants pleaded guilty on the fifth day of trial whilst the main defendant and his company contested the allegations. Both this defendant and his company were found guilty of conspiracy.

The case involved highly complex legal argument on jurisdiction, abuse of process, and the admissibility of evidence and bad character. The case centered on cell site analysis and telephone downloads to link the defendants to the conspiracy. The raw phone data material was substantial running to over 1,200 pages.
