Creeper Style Burglaries

A “creeper-style” burglary is a type of break-in where the burglar enters a home while the occupants are asleep or otherwise present.  The term “creeper” refers to the stealthy manner in which the intruder moves through the property, often avoiding detection by being quiet and careful.  This type of burglary is particularly invasive because the intruder may come into close proximity with the residents, increasing the risk and psychological impact.

Key characteristics of a creeper-style burglary include:

  1. Timing: It typically occurs during the night or early morning when the occupants are likely to be asleep
  2. Stealth: The burglar moves quietly and cautiously to avoid waking or alerting anyone inside the home
  3. Targeting valuables: The burglar often targets easily accessible and valuable items such as wallets, phones, laptops, car keys, and cash
  4. Avoiding confrontation: The burglar aims to avoid any confrontation with the residents, quickly stealing items and leaving without being detected

Creeper-style burglaries can be especially traumatising for victims compared to other types of break-ins because of the close proximity to the intruder while they are vulnerable and unaware.
