Earlier today regulatory crime specialist Nick Ham delivered an insightful online presentation to local authority lawyers entitled ‘Tribunal Appeals – An overview for Local Authorities’.

Following the changes made by the Renters’ Rights Act 2025, local authorities can expect a significant increase in the number of appeals in the First Tier Tribunal (and beyond) against financial penalties they have imposed for relevant offences. This talk provides an overview of tribunal appeals and, by looking at how the Upper Tribunal and Court of Appeal have dealt with decisions below, will aim to send participants away with the key principles to ensure successful, or at least acceptable, outcomes.
