Alan is Course Leader of Undergraduate Law Programmes at London South Bank University (LSBU) September 2023 onwards.

Alan is Module Leader for Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG)

    • Criminal Advocacy, Evidence and Litigation
    • Criminal Law
    • Mock Trials and Mooting. He has also previously led PG Public Law (2021-2023) and was deputy lead UG & PG Public Law (2014-2021)

Alan’s Law Division roles include leadership for: Assessments, Skills and Timetabling. He leads on coordinating policy and operational delivery for 700 students and 25 staff.

Alan is a writer on the leading Practitioner Publication Archbold Criminal Practice and Pleadings 2025; leading on Chapter 18 on Participation (publishing with Sweet & Maxwell September 2024)

Alan is lead author of a new Undergraduate Criminal Law Textbook 2024/25 (Publishing with by CILEX September 2024)

Alan was Course Director of Undergraduate Law Programmes at LSBU September 2016-August 2020 leading a Guardian League Table progression from 58th to 11th best law school in the UK.

Alan lead the LSBU Law Division Pandemic response March 2020-August 2022.

Alan has a proven track record of professional experience as a barrister, extensive teaching experience and leadership roles in the education sector delivering on operations, policy, and skills at LSBU and in external roles.

Associations and Memberships

Undergraduate
From 2000-2003 Alan completed his LLB Law Degree at London South Bank University attaining a first-class degree. His studies included a dissertation critically evaluating the misconception, marginalisation, and human rights implications of drawing of adverse inferences from silence in criminal cases.

Police Station Defence
From 2001-2007 whilst undertaking his studies and professional training, Alan funded his studies by working defending suspects at the Police Station in the South East of London.  He defended in a wide range of allegations from shoplifting to murder.

Postgraduate
From 2004-2005 Alan completed his MSc in Criminal Justice and Criminology at the University of Oxford, Lady Margaret Hall attaining an average of 66%.  His studies included a dissertation, supervised by Professor Andrew Ashworth QC, proposing reform to the discretionary exclusion of improperly obtained evidence based around a legitimacy model.

Professional
From 2005-2006 Alan completed the BPTC at BPP.  He was rated outstanding in Criminal Litigation.  He was awarded a Sweet and Maxwell Prize and an Exhibition Award by the Inner Temple.
