Joanne Eley is a specialist Criminal Barrister, she prosecutes and defends at a senior level, and her practice covers a full range of criminal work.

She has particular expertise in cases involving serious sexual allegations including both recent and historic cases, and cases requiring specialist witness handling of vulnerable and child witnesses. In recent times she has conducted numerous section 28 cases where the cross examination of the witness has been pre-recorded.

With regards to defence work, she has a wealth of experience in representing defendants who have mental health and learning disabilities.

Kane Mitchell was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s 11-week-old baby son.

R v Burrows and Prewitt [2021]

Prosecuted a couple who systematically raped and abused 2 children. Both received an extended sentence comprising of 22 years custody and an 8 year licence. This was a case of huge sensitivity.

R v Henson and Lowe [2022]

Prosecuted serious drugs conspiracy involving millions of pounds worth of cocaine.


R v Khan, Khan, Rehman and others [2020]

Was led successfully in prosecuting these individuals in a county lines drug operation, they received substantial prison sentences.

This area of work features heavily within Miss Eley’s practice.

In recent years Miss Eley has spent more time defending in these types of cases.

R v Loui Buttigieg [2021]

Represented a young man charge with causing or allowing non accidental injuries to an 18-month-old child. The defendant was convicted of allowing one injury.
