An 81-year-old man tragically died after being stabbed in the neck by his 27-year-old grandson. The incident took place at the victim’s home and was witnessed by his elderly wife, adding to the distressing nature of the case.
Claire Matthews was instructed on behalf of the Crown. Given the unusual and sensitive circumstances, the prosecution’s case required careful presentation and a thorough understanding of complex legal and psychiatric issues.
The primary issue for the jury to determine was the defendant’s mental state at the time of the killing. Expert evidence was presented by two forensic psychiatrists, both of whom concluded that the defendant was suffering from a mental disorder that rendered him legally insane at the time of the incident.
After considering all the evidence, the jury at Norwich Crown Court returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity.
Claire Matthews was called to the bar in 1998. She is ranked ‘Band 1’ by Chambers UK Bar 2025 and ‘Leading Junior’ Tier 3 in Legal 500 2025. Claire both defends and prosecutes. She is repeatedly instructed in cases involving serious allegations often involving complex medical evidence, in particular, murder, manslaughter, sexual offences and child abuse.
