Jo Morris led the prosecution of Andrew Lo Conte, a former prison officer charged with smuggling illicit items into HMP Pentonville. The case highlighted the serious risks posed by corrupt officials working within the prison system.
The defendant had worked for the prison service for only four months when he was apprehended during an unplanned spot check at the start of his shift. The search led to the discovery of twenty-three mobile phones, five SIM cards, thirteen charging leads, and thirty-eight grams of cannabis in his possession.
Despite his brief tenure, the defendant had gained employment as a prison guard while grappling with a drug addiction. A deeper investigation involving the analysis of his mobile phones uncovered a broader conspiracy. Evidence pointed to the involvement of a known drug dealer outside the prison and a serving inmate. Mr Lo Conte acted as the conduit, bringing in drugs and phones provided by his co-conspirators, which were then distributed by the inmate for profit.
Mr Lo Conte was sentenced to two years and four months immediate custody. The sentencing judge at Snaresbrook Crown Court emphasised that only a custodial sentence could appropriately reflect the seriousness of the Mr Lo Conte’s breach of trust, as well as the threat posed to prison order by drugs and unregulated telephones.
