Representation in Terrorism Offences

Zarif Khan represented teenager X on serious terrorism offences under section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000 (possession of extremist right-wing material) and under section 2 of the Terrorism Act 2006 (Dissemination of terrorist publications). Zarif was instructed and ably assisted by Adela Demucaj at Mayfairs Law Solicitors.

Digital and Physical Evidence of Extremism

The brief facts were that X possessed and published digitally on social media platforms and in print.  On Telegram channel, X shared, posted, and created extremist material. In print X put up posters of extremist right-wing material calling for action. A search of his numerous digital devices revealed X had an interest in violence and extreme right-wing ideologies, avidly researching infamous terrorists such as Brenton Tarrant, Anders Breivik, and Adolf Hitler.

Legal Treatment as a Youth

X was aged 17 when arrested and treated as a Youth under the law, a status that influenced the legal handling of his case.

Mitigation and Sentencing

X suffered from a severe form of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although the case crossed the custody threshold, following detailed mitigation advanced by Zarif Khan, the judge was exceptionally persuaded to pass a non-custodial sentence.
