In a lengthy trial at Maidstone Crown Court, Lidia Iancu successfully obtained a unanimous not guilty verdict for her client. The case involved serious allegations of participation in a conspiracy responsible for 112 “creeper style burglaries” over an eighteen-month period.
The prosecution’s case heavily relied on various forms of technical evidence, including call data records, cell site analysis, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) data. These were intended to demonstrate the defendant’s association with other alleged conspirators and their presence near the burglaries.
Halfway through the trial, the prosecution introduced additional evidence suggesting that the defendant had been in contact with nine other individuals accused of being involved in the conspiracy. The judge acknowledged this as a “fundamental change in the case,” which could have bolstered the prosecution’s narrative.
Despite the case presented by the prosecution, Lidia Iancu, with the support of her instructing solicitor, Daniel Salter from Edwards Duthie Shamash, effectively challenged the new evidence. Lidia presented an alternative account that cast significant doubt on the prosecution’s interpretation of the evidence.
Ultimately, the jury was convinced by the Lidia’s arguments and returned a unanimous verdict of not guilty. This case highlights the importance of a thorough legal defence and an accomplished advocate to challenge even the most seemingly conclusive evidence.
Lidia Iancu was called to the bar in 2017. She is known for her calm approach, particularly in difficult circumstances, and for her steadfast and robust advocacy style.
